UCPH Book Proposal Outline

Please submit a proposal whether or not you have a completed manuscript. Tell us why you’re excited about your book and why we should be too. What is unique about your idea, and how does it fit with The United Church of Canada’s ethos? Use the following outline to help you. You can also find lots of advice on the Internet on how to write a compelling book proposal.

Proposal Overview

What is the book title?*

What is the book subtitle?

Who is the target audience, and what makes your book unique and worthwhile for them?

What about your topic or content makes it uniquely United Church? Is it clearly connected to faith, spirituality, or the United Church’s ethos, beliefs, history, or another church-based topic?

Target Audience

Who is your core audience, the most likely purchasers of this book?

How big is that market?

What other groups and types of readers will also be interested? Will your topic appeal to other denominations or to some members of a secular audience?

About the Author

What are your credentials and experience?

What makes you uniquely qualified to write and promote this book?

Competitive Titles

List and summarize the major competitive titles, and explain why yours is different from each.

Marketing and Promotion

Where should promotion be focused?

What magazines and other media does your target audience pay attention to?

Testimonials/reviews: What “name” people would be willing to contribute a review? Can you get their commitment before your manuscript is completed?

Describe additional promotional opportunities you will pursue.

Detailed Table of Contents

Include the full Table of Contents, with detailed summaries of each chapter. This section could be anywhere from 3 to 20 pages. It needs to give a comprehensive, detailed map of what the book will contain.
